The Town of Gates Fire Marshal's office is staffed by a Fire Marshal and Deputy Fire Marshal. The office is responsible for a wide range of activities including fire inspections of new and existing buildings, plan reviews, and the overall fire safety of the community.

Bill was appointed the Gates Fire Marshal in August of 2007. Bill was the Deputy Fire Marshal for Gates from 1992 until his appointment as Fire Marshal. Bill is a past member of the Gates Chili Volunteer Fire Department. He is the immediate Past President of the New York State Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association and recently finished serving on the New York State Fire Code Technical Subcommittee.

Deputy Fire Marshal Dave Tytler

Dave was hired October 1st, 2007 as a Deputy Fire Marshal. He retired as a Career Lieutenant with the Gates Fire District after 29 years of service. He also held the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief of Co. 1 and Safety Officer while in the volunteer service. Dave held the position of Assistant Fire Marshal with the Town of Chili from April of 2000 until June of 2007 where he conducted public assembly inspections.

Responsibilities

The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for the general fire safety for the Town of Gates. This begins with professional plan reviews for all new commercial construction and ends with required annual fire safety inspections. In between there are meetings with contractors, building owners and fire safety equipment installers.
The Fire Marshal and any assistants are certified by the State of New York as Code Enforcement Officials to administer and enforce the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code that governs the way commercial buildings are designed, constructed and maintained. The Fire Marshal performs annual fire safety inspections' at all commercial buildings and educates the owners about the violations that are found. Annual operational permits are issued if no violations are found or any violations found are corrected.

The Fire Marshal issues construction permits for the installation of fire safety systems, hazardous material storage areas, solid fuel burning devices, vent free room heating appliances and torch down roofing.
