Property owners often confuse their property taxes and assessments.

Assessments not taxes are determined by your local (Town) Assessor

Taxes or tax rates are determined by the budgets that are adopted which are determined by your School Board, Town/ Village Board, City Councils, County Legislatures and Special Districts.

Special Districts can be Fire Department, Ambulance, Lighting, Garbage or County Water Sewage services.

If you feel your property Assessment is too high, you should discuss it with your Town/Village Assessor and consider contesting your assessment.

An increased assessment does not necessarily mean higher taxes.
